Ivo Kalina (1925. - 1995.)
RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION
Museum of Modern Art, 1994

Ivo Kalina: composition

Born in 1925, in Zagreb, a two years old Ivo Kalina was brought to Opatija, on the Mediterranean Sea, in that point of this sea where it cuts furthes into the continent. These are the years when the impressions from the surroundings imprint deepest into one's mind. This is also where we can find the earliest (as well as the much later) fascination with the seaside, Liburnia, as this particular coast was called towards the end of the sixties.

In the history of the Croatian art of the fifties and the sixties the name of Ivo Kalina will be written in capital letters. Being the partecipant of important changes in society and in art, Kalina was not just an onlooker or accidental traveller, but actively worked on new values that were inside his range of interest. On the one side having the disadvantage of living in a small surroundings (Croatia) that is those years lived in a semi isolatio, on the other having the advantage from the very same fact as he could create autonomus values by going deep into his very self, into the logic of his own artistic path and credo.

Ivo Kalina has paved masterly a major road into the Croatian history of art.
