The subject of culture hero actualises one of the concurrent social phenomena of both past and present century, grown on developed marketing apparatuses of state policies. After few recorded downfalls of totalitarian systems and their beloved leaders – heroes, there was a talk on the debacle of Great narratives, but the search for heroes is not over yet.
However, as opposed to the totalitarian regimes, transnational economic neoliberalism shuns away from officially establishing the hero, so it is not clear as to what s/he is and where to look for her/him.
Economy turned transnational, yet arts continue to act within national frameworks. We are left over with a task of examining the national hero artist and her/his importance today. Is the artist, and in what manner, presented by the state cultural policies and what is the artist's role today? What is the difference between artists and sportsmen, when it comes to deciding the biggest national heroes?
Which are the artists or the cultural protagonists that we are aware of as our representatives in the world today? Is a notion of state artist a thing of the past or a concealed ideology? Does the art exert any significant impact on the society? All of these are the issues to be discussed by participants and the audience of the 2 Biennial of Quadrilateral on December 7.. Author of a concept within her 2007 project Work in Progress: Lara Badurina (artist)
Participants: Mladen Stilinović (artist), Dragan Živadinov (artist), Dejan Kršić (theoretician).
